King`s speech crowned in LA
Inception and The Social Network were next in line, gaining four and three Academy Awards in various categories respectively.
Colin Firth bested the legendary Jeff Bridges in True Grit, Jesse Eisenberg in The Social Network, James Franco in 127 Hours and Spanish actor Javier Bardem in Biutiful. The director of The King?s Speech - a story about King George VI of England - Tom Hooper, and screenwriter David Seidler, also captured Oscars at the 83rd Academy Awards.
The star of Black Swan, a drama by Darren Aronofsky, Natalie Portman won the Best Actress Oscar for her performance as a mentally unbalanced ballerina. At the ceremony, a pregnant Natalie Portman thanked Benjamin Millepied, her fiancee and the Black Swan choreographer for giving her the most important role, "the role of a mother" which she is soon expected to be.
Meanwhile, Portman`s rivals for best actress were Annette Bening in The Kids Are All Right, Nicole Kidman for Rabbit Hole, Jennifer Lawrence in Winter`s Bone and Michelle Williams in Blue Valentine.
The real life-based story of boxer Micky Ward, The Fighter, garnered Best Supporting Actor and Actress Oscars for Christian Bale and Melissa Leo respectively.
Toy Story 3 received the Oscar for best animated feature leaving behind The Illusionist by Sylvain Chomet, the creator of The Tripletes of Belleville and How to Train Your Dragon by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois. It also scored the best original song Oscar for "We Belong Together", with music and lyrics by Randy Newman.
Alice in Wonderland won two golden statuettes. One for Art Direction over its rivals Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, The King`s Speech, Inception, True Grit. The other gong acknowledged the movie`s costume design.
